Heightened Road Risks Amid Holiday Freight Traffic Surge

Heightened Road Risks Amid Holiday Freight Traffic Surge

As the Australian summer holidays approach, insurers and transport specialists are raising alarms about increased road risks due to the convergence of peak freight activity and heightened passenger vehicle travel.
This period traditionally sees a surge in both freight movements and family road trips, leading to congested roads and a higher potential for accidents.

Recent data from the National Truck Accident Research Centre (NTARC) indicates that in 85.7% of fatal crashes involving a car and a heavy vehicle, the truck driver was not at fault. This statistic underscores the critical need for all road users to exercise caution, particularly when sharing the road with heavy vehicles.

Aaron Louws, NTI's supply chain technical manager, emphasized the importance of understanding the operational differences between trucks and cars. He noted that trucks have larger blind spots and require longer distances to slow down. Louws advised drivers to exercise patience and caution, especially on rural roads, and to adhere strictly to speed limits and road conditions to prevent dangerous situations.

Fatigue is another significant concern during the holiday season. With many families embarking on long-distance journeys, the risk of driver fatigue increases. Louws stressed the importance of planning journeys with scheduled rest breaks and stopping when tired, as sleep is the only effective remedy for fatigue.

The holiday period also coincides with a peak in freight and parcel deliveries. In the November–December period last year, Australians lodged 103 million shipments, many destined for residential addresses. This surge results in more heavy vehicles and delivery vans operating in suburban and regional areas, further increasing the potential for road incidents.

For fleet operators and insurers, this period necessitates heightened vigilance and proactive risk management strategies. Implementing comprehensive safety programs, ensuring drivers are well-rested, and promoting public awareness about sharing the road safely with heavy vehicles are crucial steps in mitigating risks during this busy season.

In summary, the intersection of increased freight activity and holiday travel poses significant challenges for road safety. Collaborative efforts between the transport industry, insurers, and the public are essential to ensure a safe and incident-free holiday period.
